Soul's
Evidence, Part 6 (Chapter 10)
In Chapter 1 the narrator, a graduate student in German literature attracted
to the “counterculture,” is introduced to the poetry of Paul Celan and
undertakes to write her doctoral dissertation about him. In Chapter 2 her
first impressions of the poetry are described. In Chapters 3-5 she
contemplates the Berkeley environment and her own family past, often in the
light of the poems which she is still unable to understand consciously. In
Chapter 6 she goes to Munich for a year of study abroad, with the
expectation that at some time during this year she will meet the poet in
person. Chapters 7 and 8 describe her impressions of Germany and further
experiences with the poems, by which she feels ever more powerfully
addressed; she writes to the poet and obtains an interview, which is
described in Chapter 9. After the interview she returns to the United
States.
